What To Know About Shapewear

To shapewear or not to shapewear? As bridal seamstresses we get that question a lot. Much like there not being a one size fits all approach to alterations, we believe this to be true with shapewear. Let’s talk about some basics.

At the end of the day- your comfort is tantamount

While we can provide guidance, and suggestions; at the end of the day, it’s your wedding. The most important thing is that you are comfortable in a way that allows you to focus on the moment- and not your wardrobe. Stressing about your dress should be the last thing on your to do list on wedding day. If you have concerns, chat with us- we’re happy to walk through factors for consideration and help you make a decision that is best for you.

What is your day to day?

This is the first question we’ll ask you. If you wear shapewear every single day and you feel wrong without it, your wedding day is probably not a day to play with new routines. The same goes the other way- if you don’t typically wear shapewear, we’re not going to immediately recommend you buy shapewear before your fitting, come talk to us before you go investing in any undergarments.

Your Dress should do the work

Barring a few uncommon scenarios- your dress should be doing the work of shapewear. Once your gown is fitted properly, everything should be staying in place. In many cases, shapewear can actually make an accurate fit more complex as the smoothing fabrics can cause slippage where a gown would normally grip the body.

If support is your concern…

Remember that boning and corsetry are both options. Adding boning to a gown can be a great light shaping option that eliminates the variable of slippage, lines, or lumps. Corsetry, or having a corset, or inner corset installed in a gown can be an excellent option if you have concerns about posture or back pain, while simultaneously providing the sculpting affect without the added layers.

Do We Have Favorite Shapewear Brands?

We do have a couple of undergarment brands that we have had success with depending on the situation. We carry Boomba’s in studio- and highly recommend them for strapless gowns. And we’ve had good results with correctly fitted Honey love products depending on the fit of the gown.
